A
lion mauled a man on Sunday in Accra, the capital of Ghana, after he broke into
the feline enclosure, according to the government organization in charge of
wildlife preservation.
According
to a statement made by John Allotey, Chief Executive of the Forestry
Commission, which has jurisdiction over the Accra Zoo, employees of the Accra
Zoo detected an intruder had passed the security gates and entered the lion's
enclosure of the Zoo approximately 12 p.m. on Sunday (August 28, 2022).
"The
intruder was attacked and injured by one of the lions. He was confirmed dead
from his injuries and his body was taken to the morgue," the Commission
continued.
While
the body was being removed from their enclosure, the lion, the lioness, and
their two pups were temporarily housed in a cage.
Wildlife
authorities suspect he may have planned to steal two rare white lion cubs which
have become a big draw since their birth last November.
The
victim's body was retrieved from the zoo and taken to a local morgue.
Police
have opened an investigation to establish the motive of the intruder and circumstances
surrounding the attack.
A
lion, a lioness and the two white cubs were in the enclosure when the incident
happened.
The
intruder's motivation is yet unknown. Police have been contacted by the zoo to
begin an investigation.
